Transforming the global power system is key in achieving green growth and will require massive and coordinated investments in renewable energy, smarter grids, and energy efficiency. Given the value of assets in existing power systems, and the growing diversity of innovative demand- and supply-side energy resources, new market-design paradigms are necessary to speed investment by private sector firms. The vision of this session was to accelerate investment in power system transformation through a new market reform.
The 21st Century Power Partnership and the 3GF are collaborating to convene key stakeholders to address this critical policy topic. The aim is to commit both public and private actors to establish guiding principles for power market design and business model evolution in support of Power System Transformation in the 21st century.
Session at 3GF2013
To this end 3GF 2013 featured a PPP session on Power System Transformation - New Market Paradigms. The session convened key power system stakeholders – investors, regulators, project developers, and policy makers – to critically examine issues in power market design. The session arrived at guiding principles for market design and business model evolution in support of Power System Transformation. Furthermore, it worked on developing a commitment by public and private collaborators to establish a market design research program. This effort focused on distilling key principles for 21st century power market design, and on developing and promulgating policy portfolios to accelerate transformative investment.
